Say no to Apple! Now mind you, I am not some 'newb' to the computer world. As a matter of fact, my first taste and love affair with computers started with an Apple II Mac. It was huge, had about 8 colors, and two 5.5" floppy drives that I'd use to load up Oregon Trail. Times have changed and I am probably at my 12th personal computer. I've owned and worked on everything from a Sun machine, x86/x64 servers, Apple servers, etcetera. I have hated some and loved others.

Now, Apple systems since they are based off FreeBSD have a inherently more secure structure than its Windows counterparts. However, unlike what the marketing team likes to mislead and convey to the public, they are not overall more secure than a Windows machine out of the box these days. During launch of Windows Vista (which really isn't at all bad but really not worth shelling out the coin to upgrade over XP), there were about 50 security flaws found and the Apple fanatics decided to use this information to further smear the image of Microsoft. Well, when Leopard was launched for Mac's, there were well over 200 serious security flaws. Not to mention the current problem of the critical DNS flaw that Apple still hasn't full addressed.

So why does Apple have such a great name now-a-days and why do I despise them? Well, it's pretty simple actually. They deceit people day in and day out. They constantly use phrases such as "they just work" - well, when I first setup a network system at a college using all Mac's in the office, it didn't just work...as a matter of fact it took hours of talking to tech that didn't seem to have adequate training. When I go out to fix computers for people, I would say that easily 80% of my customers are having issues with their Mac's not "just work[ing]." They hide all actual and important settings from the GUI and just give a very simple and dumbed down UI that really isn't capable of doing all but the most basic things. As a matter of fact, you need to treat it just like a Unix system to actually do real administrative tasks. So much for ease of use.

Now, here's what I really mean about deceit. Apple and their followers are constantly calling other companies like Microsoft a monopolistic corporation and greedy. Well, lets see now, since when did Microsoft make you buy their hardware to use their software on? Unlike Apple, there's no EULA keeping you from installing their software on anything that it can run on. On my own iPhone, I can't even buy software without Apple deciding first what software I am allowed to have - thanks mom. In the latest iteration of iPhone firmware, there's a bit of code that lets Apple disable and remove software from your phone. That's right, though it's YOUR phone, Apple will force you to get rid of software they don't want there - even if you've paid for it or wrote it yourself. How is that for monopolistic and controlling?

This is only part of my rant on Apple since I can go on for days. Whether it's about my customers computers, my Macbook Pro, my 5th iPhone. The reason for Apple's current success in the computer world (music players are because of their right since they do have a very good product) is IMO not because of their superior product but because of one of the best marketing teams.

To me, Apple is like an abusive and controlling g/f that would attempt to control your breathing if it could only find a way to.
